Interview of Peter Jackson - 11 May 2001

Were glad to have you with us Peter Jackson, youre a legend for a lot of us. Maybe your name doesnt mean anything for the audience but soon youll be know by everybody since the first film of the Lord of the Rings is coming out at the end of the year. We had been lucky, we have seen the projection this afternoon and if i tell you right now, having seen the faces of the people when they went out of the cinema, that having you here is like having Geoge Lucas in 77 just before Star Wars came out, how do you feel ?

Oh, you know, its wonderful to come back at Cannes. One of the biggest events of my life was when i came here with my first film Bad Taste. It was 13 years ago. And its strange because during the projection at the Olympia, people had the same reaction as they had 13 years ago watching Bad Taste. Its really great to be back at the Olympia in Cannes.

Before it became a film, the Lord of the rings has been a best seller. A book as famous as the bible ( smile ). Tell us about it.

The lord of the ring is divided in 3 books, and its, according to me, one of the reasons why we had to wait nearly 45 years before someone made a film. It was difficult to make one film from 3 books. Its impossible. And we were lucky we could make 3 different films , at the same time, during 274 days non stop. This is the story of a hobbit who is given a ring which is very powerful and dangerous. There is only one place where he can destroy the ring which is at more than 3000km away and he has to walk through a very dangerous land. The fellowship of the ring is a group of people who are going to help him.

Everybody expects the film. Are you under stress ?

Actually, its cool because people loved the projection. You know, the film is coming out in 6 months and weve been working on that for 2 years and its the very fist time that somebody saw something from the film. After what all the team has given during the shoootage, it s wondferful to have a feed back, and to see that people liked it. Its very encouraging. I have to go back to New Zealand on monday and to keep on working and I am very motivated after that.
